The Beach House by Jane Green

Although Jane Green is somewhat known for being, even amoung chick lit writers, vapid--in this book she does a very nice job. The Beach House is set in Nantuket (spelling?) Island where widow Nan suddenly finds out she is out of money. Many of the other older locals are selling their property to make was for McMansions, but Nan decides to hold out, and turns her house into a bed and breakfast.
All of the major characters in the book--recently out-of-the-closet Daniel, his ex-wife Bee, recently divorced Daff, her surly daughter, and Michael, Nan's only child, are delightful and end up staying together in Nan's Beach House only to find their lives entangle further.
My major criticism of the book is that I wonder if Jane Green has ever been to the US, much less Nantucket. All of the character seem British and use British slang. Other, than that, better than usual Jane Green!
4 out of 5 stars
