This is inspirational fiction that's just my speed. Gentle, tolerant, and not particularly preachy. Like much of this genre, "A Change of Heart" is part of a series (Book Five to be exact, in the "Harmony" series) The book follows a year in the life of the mythical town Harmony, mostly through the eyes and experiences of a Quaker Pastor named Sam Gardner. Harmony is peopled with an assortment of characters and conflicts, most notable being Dale Hinshaw (the local fundamentalist zealot) and Amanda Hodge, a teen trying to reconcile her the torn relationship between her father and uncle.
Gulley provides a believable (if somewhat sacchrine) version of small town life. The stories he weaves hinge on broader principles (like forgiveness, tolerance, and service to others), resisting the temptation to become doctrinairre.
I found this to be passable contemporary inspirational fiction. Considering its focus on small town life and the dealings of a pastor I think it would be a good recommendation for people who've enjoyed the Jan Karon "Mitford Series". Recommend with confidence.
