The Off-Season by Catherine Gilbert Murdock.

This is the sequel to the oft-talked about and loved teen book The Dairy Queen, which I wish I would have known when I began the book. Although it is a pretty good read, the book screams sequel! and having never read The Dairy Queen, I felt lost at many of the events that were referenced.

For those of you who haven't read either book, it stars a young teenage girl who is a sports wonder and joins the (male of course) football team in her small Wisconisan town. By the time the sequel rolls around the football teammates have accepted her as a part of the team and all seems well until her older brother (also a football player) has a massive spinal injury during the game. She also suffers a blow to one of her sholders that threats her true passion: basketball...which is the one way she can get to college --through atheletic scholarship. Also, her love interest is acting like a big jerk.

It's a great coming of age novel --we see real development in the main character as she struggles to deal with her our insecurities as well as help her brother with his new disablement.

In short, I would recommend this book to anyone who read The Dairy Queen, but not to those who have not.
