This harrowing story of the triumph of love begins with teenage Celie giving up a baby born of the man who she believes is her father. From there, Celie is married away to a man who beats her, to save her sister Nettie. Nettie and Celie’s lives take different paths: Celie as a poor, abused housewife, and Nettie as a missionary to Africa. Through the support of her friends Shug and Sofia, Celie begins to have faith in herself and rise above the abuse and loneliness that has plagued her life, and when she realizes Nettie is still alive after 40 years, she again has a new reason to appreciate life.
This story shows both beauty and ugliness, triumph and heartache, power and weakness, and above all, survival for the ones you love. While sometimes difficult to read (through Celie’s poor grammar and spelling or the rape scenes), the story gives ample closure and satisfaction at the end.
