For me, the only redeeming thing about this book is the perspective on the beat generation of the 1950's. Here's the plot - Sal Paradise goes on a cross-country trip with some friends, and then he comes back. And then he goes on a another cross-country trip, and comes back. Finally, one last cross-country trip, and then back. The End. Oh, and in between every pointless piece of minutia is described for no plot reasons except to give an excruciatingly accurate portrayal of what happened every single day.
I've been told that men like this book better than women. I've also been told that there's a certain point in your life when you think this book is really great. I'm not sure what time of a person's life that is though. I'm pretty sure I skipped that stage, or I suppose it's possible I'm not there yet. So I guess I would only recommend it to people who ask for it specifically.
