This story is pretty silly. Obviously a teenage boy working for British secret service is a bit of a stretch anyway, but this wasn't even trying.
Alex Rider is an orphan, 14, living with his uncle the banker. His uncle is killed suddenly and Alex doesn't buy the story. He finds out his uncle was actually a spy, and the detective work Alex does in the process of figuring this fact out impresses the spy organization so much that they send in Alex to finish his uncle's last mission. Cheesy lines, imminent death and caricature bad guys abound.
I had higher hopes for this. I'm not in the least bit tempted to read the sequels. But I guess I can see why (younger) teen boys would like it. Jared is reading the sequels and says they are exactly the same story with a new bad guy and a new global threat. Like mad libs. He's still reading them though, so there you go.
I listened to the audiobook, and the reader was fine. If someone likes the series, I see no reason why they would not like the audiobooks as well.
